Stories from our lives here on the Front Range of Colorado. Lots of mountain bike adventures, ski days, hikes, pictures of Cooper and Lauren, our two dogs and anything else I choose to pontificate about.
After a nice night deep in the park, the big peak showed itself again the next morning. It never really gets dark in Alaska this time of year, although sunset is technically 12:30 or so, it really just looks like dusk or dawn from about 12 - 3am. So after we slept (using masks), we got up and did a hike a couple miles north of our campsite to find the fabled Reflecting Pool where most of the "for sale" images of the big peak are taken.
We weren't real sure where the pool was, just the general direction it was in. After an hour or so of good paced hiking, we saw the pool just west of us. There really are no trails in Denali, so its open hiking across the oddly spongy tundra. After some route finding, we wound our way to the north side of the pool and positioned ourselves for shots of the mountain.
And a movie that shows a bit of the area and the ridiculous mosquitoes. I've never seen anything remotely close to the abundance of mosquitoes near Wonder Lake. Its a good thing we didn't have Cooper with us, as I am quite certain he would have gotten carried away.
Shortly after, we packed up camp and headed up to catch a bus out to get back to Super Cooper. Unfortunately for our baby sitters though, it took us a long, long time to get a bus with room for us and then 7 or 8 hours before we finally got back to our car at the park entrance. A quick 2 hour drive and we were back in Fairbanks and starting to get ready for the 2nd part of our adventure in Alaska.
